Our Culture

We built a methodology grounded in the belief that wealth planning should account for the whole person. We try to work the same way.

Human Wealth is based in California, and organized around clients who are navigating the most significant moments of their financial lives. The people who work here manage portfolios in the conventional sense and hold a person’s full picture at the moments that matter most: when a business is being sold, a marriage is ending, a parent is declining, a career is changing shape. That is the work. It requires the same quality of attention from every person in this building.

Our Ethics

Five things we actually try to do.

Humans First

Clients, team, and community: in every decision, people come before process. When a system or a process creates friction for a person, the system changes. Not the person. The client’s life dictates the advisory agenda, not the other way around.

Innovate and Lead

The industry was not building what clients actually needed. That gap is why this firm exists. The same willingness to name what is not working and build something better applies internally: to how we work, how we use technology, and how we support each other.

Prioritize Wellness and Wellbeing

The methodology exists because financial planning that ignores the human experience of the client is incomplete. The same is true of a firm that ignores the human experience of its own people. Wellbeing is not a benefit add-on. It is how this firm operates.

Embrace Transition

Transitions are the core of the client work. The firm was founded during an industry transition it recognized before most others did. The team lives with transition as a constant: methodological evolution, platform changes, the WAW annual research update. This is not a firm where the status quo is the goal.

Ground in Research and Data

The methodology was not built on intuition. It was built on NEF’s research, developed through the WAW initiative, and updated every year. The same standard applies inside the firm: decisions are made on evidence, not assumption. The research that informs client work informs how we work.

The People

The team behind the work.

Scott Coles, Founder and Wealth Advisor at Human Wealth

Scott Coles

Founder and Wealth Advisor

Scott has served on the boards of Strive, Zaytoon International, and the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, and invests time every month in charitable causes and mentoring others. He hosted “You and Your Money” on 640 AM for years. Outside the work, he reaches for anything that involves friends and family: exercise, water sports, travel, and watching the sunrise.

David Coles, Co-Founder, President, and Wealth Advisor at Human Wealth

David Coles

Co-Founder, President, and Wealth Advisor

David recently passed his WSET Level 2 examination with the Wine and Spirits Education Trust of England and is studying the winemaking process. He sails. The same curiosity that led him to spend months reading wellbeing research before co-founding the firm shows up in how he approaches everything outside the office.

Shirly Chyan, Financial Paraplanner at Human Wealth

Shirly Chyan, FPQP

Financial Paraplanner

Shirly studied interior design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles before moving into financial services. She cooks restaurant-quality dishes from cuisines across the world. She plans her year around music festivals and international travel. She has been with this work long enough to have watched the firm become what it set out to be.

The Broader Team

The Work

What it is like to be inside this practice.

The office has held the same clients and the same approach for over four decades, and the team that works here now is building on that continuity rather than restarting it.

Most advisory practices organize around assets. This one is organized around moments: the transitions that change a client’s financial picture and their sense of who they are simultaneously. A business sale. A divorce. A parent’s death. A retirement that arrives before the identity question is answered. Advisors here are trained to hold both dimensions at once: the financial plan and the life behind it. That is what this practice was built for.

If you have spent your career trying to do that kind of work at a firm that does not have a framework for it, this is where the framework lives.
